Shaping Faith Japanese Ichiboku Buddhist Statues INTRODUCTION : This Catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition as "Shaping Faith Japanese Ichiboku Buddhist Statues" 3 October- 3 December 2006 / Tokyo National Museum This catalog includes 65 Buddhist sculptures carved from a single tree at the exhibition. About 40 of them are masterpieces designated as national treasures or important cultural properties. This exhibition introduces the faith and spirituality of the Japanese people through the wooden Buddhist sculptures nurtured in Japan. Ichinoku-cho Among the countries that believed in Buddhism, no other country was as particular about making Buddhist statues out of wood as Japan, especially during the Nara (710-794 CE) and Heian periods (794-1185), when the Ichinoku-cho method of making statues from a single tree developed. This trend continued until the Edo period (1603-1867), when Buddhist sculptors Enku and Mokujiki were established. ------------------------------------- All contents are in Japanese, with English translations of only the list of works and chapter descriptions.
