Enku's Buddhas Sculptures from Senkoji Temple and the Hida Region INTRODUCTION : This Catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition as "Enku's Buddhas : Sculptures from Senkoji Temple,Hida Region" 12 January- 7 April 2013 / Tokyo National Museum , Tokyo Enku was born in the provice of Mino(southern Gifu prefecture). For the last thirty years of his life, beginning in 1666, he traveled throughout Japan immersing himself in ascetic practice and dedicating himself to carving Buddhist icons. Currently, there are more than 5,000 Buddha figures left, and most of them have survived in Aichi and Gifu prefectures. This book is an exhibition catalog "Enku's Buddhas : Sculptures from Senkuji Temple and the Hida Region" and contains 46 photographs of Buddhist statues by Enku. Many of them are from the Senkoji collection, which has a deep connection with Enku.
